Almost wrote an essay instead of a review, lmao

Shamelessly lifted from my MAL review because I spent way too much time thinking about the show yesterday (https://myanimelist.net/reviews.php?id=319188)
Abstract/Summary
While its pacing deeply suffers under the weight of its thematic ambitions and its social commentary can be laughably blunt (and overly idealistic/optimistic), Carole and Tuesday is nevertheless a profound and immense work by Studio Bones and Shinichiro Watanabe that attempts to tackle the subject of modern music production in ways that few music anime have tried.
Viewers with a distaste for politics and social commentary will find this show easy to hate, but those willing to stick it out and settle in for the ride will find, if nothing else, a beautiful and unique journey with plenty of ear-pleasers to match.
Story
The quality of storytelling in Carole and Tuesday is possibly the greatest flaw in the show and yet its most fascinating aspect. An explicit collaboration between Studio Bones and FlyingDog for their 20th and 10th anniversary respectively, Carole and Tuesday at times feels like desperate advertising for an album, where almost every episode averages exactly two musical numbers. (more on the sound later)
Without context this doesn't necessarily sound like a bad thing for a music anime. The first 6 episodes are a strong arc that centre around the titular duo trying different ways to get a foot in the door of the music industry, with deeply personal and whimsical performances that contrast with powerful yet paint-by-numbers mainstream pop ballads, electronica et al.
However this makes way to a tournament arc/talent show, of all things, which forgoes characterisation in favour of shallow plot complications revolving around a yandere superfan and a brief hint at Tuesday's complicated backstory.
It's an efficient way of putting as many songs on display as possible but because of the time wasted here, later episodes cram multiple simultaneous plotlines into a single 22-minute run, often while including an "artist of the week". It's incredibly messy and doesn't do any of the plot elements any favours. It's a shame because on many levels these later plotlines can be thought-provoking, emotional and enjoyable in their own right.
Without going into specifics, the meat of Carole and Tuesday's plot in the second cour targets themes of censorship, self-actualization, endemic and pervasive peer toxicity, drug abuse, and the long, historical marriage between music and political activism. It integrates all this with a scope rarely seen in music anime, and Watanabe's influence feels heaviest here.
As other reviewers have pointed out, there are still minor elements of this story that do feel wasted or unnecessary. A subplot revolving around AI production dominating the industry wraps up without being very meaningful, and the sci-fi setting of Mars feels little more than a self-indulgent move on Watanabe's part to include Woolongs as a currency again.
The cramped nature of the story, again means that the stakes sometimes feel very low or poorly explained, especially for the main characters who seem like they're coasting on success despite being a legitimate catalyst for the finale, which as a complete story resolves itself in ways that can feel a little sappy and over-optimistic (surprisingly so for a Watanabe script).
But the majority of my foibles are overshadowed by what story Carole and Tuesday does manage to tell effectively, which conveys the highs and lows of the spirit of music and the things (both material and immaterial) that drives that creative process, all in a incredibly genuine and human way that feels different to that of other anime in its genre.
It's why despite probably being the weakest part of Carole and Tuesday, it's the deciding factor that led me to keep my 9/10 rating overall. It approaches its love of music in a different, socially conscious way that few others have dared and as a result comes across as more unique than its peers. Watchers of the show who care little about this aspect will likely rate this show much lower, and I honestly wouldn't begrudge them that - but this unique approach is what I watch a Watanabe gig for.
Characters
Carole and Tuesday delves into the modern music production process in fair detail and so the overwhelming majority of its characters are musicians: performers, their producers and managers. The cast is as culturally diverse as its music (far and away more so than many anime, as is often Watanabe's style) and while the show does mildly draw from traditional anime archetypes, they tend to be more blatantly inspired by real-life industry icons both past and present.
It's these parallels that give the story its better moments: viewers can recognise the paths walked by the characters of Carole and Tuesday and readily understand the themes they convey, their triumphs and struggles. It's this aspect that becomes especially important in later episodes, as a lot of the heavy lifting in the storytelling becomes easier when viewers can identify a parable of a real-life artist and focus more on the developments that surround them.
There are some questionable design choices and backstories for a handful of characters - there are some very flat and two-dimensional ones that come out of the tournament arc, as expected, and some strong hits yet strong misses on characters written around Carole and Tuesday's familial story arcs. On the whole though, they're generally smartly designed, expertly voiced (shout-outs to stalwart performances by Hiroshi Kamiya, Mamoru Miyano and Akio Ohtsuka) and well-animated as is per Studio Bones' pedigree.
Technical (Art/Animation/Sound)
And while perhaps not Studio Bones' most impressive work on a technical level (far and away that crown goes to Space Dandy, a series most laser-focused on technical creativity if nothing else), Carole and Tuesday marries enjoyably whimsical visual design and efficient animation with a musical tour de force that is Watanabe's signature style.
The show is bookended by some incredible OPs and EDs, with international heavyweights like Thomas Romain, Stanislas Brunet and the ever-ascending Bahi JD directing setting and animation that evokes a journey through familiar Americana architecture but contrasts with almost alien-like mechanical design and near-future technology. The actual show itself never inspires as much with its background art, but is enjoyable enough at best and inoffensive at the least.
The real treat is in the character animation - in particular, the animation of its musical performances. There are definitely people who despise rotoscoping to the very depths of their soul, but I personally think the sheer quantity of work required to animate multiple performances or musical montages every single episode makes it a smart choice - it really helps convey that Carole and Tuesday's songs are being performed by real human beings, which is a pretty important element of the story. It also helps bridge the connect between the actual artists performing the songs and the characters, since none of the actual seiyuu are actually responsible for performing any of the music (besides one hilarious beatboxing sequence at the tail end of the show).
It's also far and away the better choice compared to 3D animated models, which in other music anime loses some of the organic charm of hand-drawn art, and here has mostly been relegated to background art and sparingly-animated musical instruments.
There are a few art inconsistencies elsewhere and the use (and re-use) of still frames as reaction shots to pad out episodes can become a little annoying over time, but it's clear like many other anime productions, Studio Bones was extremely judicious with budgeting its production timeline and the vast majority of what they set out to achieve was executed without diminishing the quality of its work too much.
There's actually not as much to say about the sound design of Carole and Tuesday despite being the obvious standout pleasure and highlight of the show. Watanabe along with FlyingDog have curated a culturally diverse collaboration of international artists both Japanese and western, resulting in a "something for everyone" presentation that stands out from other shows.
It's this cultural breadth that contributes greatly to the show's success - from techno by Taku Takahashi (m-flo), Steve Aoki and MOGUAI, lo-fi/trip-hop from the likes of Taylor McFerrin and Flying Lotus, French electronica from Maika Loubte, straight rap from Denzel Curry(!) and classic-sounding pop/power ballads and 90's RnB from names like Tim Rice-Oxley, Evan Bogart and Justin Gray.
There are too many other great artists to name, but credit is definitely due for all the vocal performers. Nai Br.XX and Celeina Ann, while most definitely not the best English soundalikes for seiyuu duo Miyuri Shimabukuro and Kana Ichinose, are absolutely pitch-perfect vocalists and their harmonization throughout almost all of their performances is something really special.
The care and thought put into the vocal casting really pays off. Each vocalist genuinely presents a diversity of vocal experience and age, from amateur to multi-award-winner, and singers like Alisa, Lauren Dyson and Jessica Karpov expertly evoke the vocal range of real-life counterparts for their characters. Many of the songs lyrically develop these characters as the plot progresses and culminates in what I honestly, legitimately believe is Shinichiro Watanabe's best story ending since Cowboy Bebop (although for very different reasons, but which will be just as subjective and divisive).
Enjoyment (Conclusion)
Like many of Shinichiro Watanabe's shows, Carole and Tuesday is not a series that will resonate with everyone the same way it did for me. With its serious pacing issues, uneven storytelling and ping-ponging between low-stakes fluff and politically finicky subject matter, I can imagine many viewers will be turned away from finishing the show because of its flaws. Detractors will love to learn that its utterly erratic international release on Netflix means that only a small proportion of viewers will probably end up actually seeing it through from start to finish.
But just like their last collaboration, Space Dandy, Carole and Tuesday feels unique in its approach to anime. Thematically it struggles to bring everything together, but without the themes it holds and the love in its labour, it would feel like an incredibly superficial and throwaway Bones production. There are few shows like this one ever made, for better and worse, and for me that makes Carole and Tuesday a very, very special thing.
tl;dr, this show is honestly kind of a mess and the more I think about it the more I resent the Mars Brightest arc because of it, but the characters are great and the animation is appropriately lifelike, the music is incredible and the writing tries to take on themes that very few anime ever do. I'm told this makes me a 'stan account', whatever that means

narasimha ashTottara shatanAma stOtra - Post 3: Verse 8-12.

Continued from here.
हृषीकेशो जगत्प्राणः सर्वज्ञः सर्वकामदः ।
नास्तिकप्रत्ययार्थाय दर्शितात्मप्रभाववान् ॥ 8 ॥
हृषीकेशः - hRShIkeshaH - hRShIka means sense and actuator organs, sense organs and sense objects are :
the actuator organs are :
eesha means ruleownelord. So he is the eesha (lord) of our sense and actuator organs (hRiShIka). It also means curly haired, (curly) hRiShI + (haired) kesha.
जगत्प्राणः - jagatprANaH - jagat means world, prANa means life force. He is the life givesustainer of the world.
सर्वज्ञः - sarvaj~naH (HK: sarvajJaH) - sarva means everything, jna means know, omniscient.
सर्वकामदः - sarvakAmadaH - sarva means everything, kAma means desire and da (द) means dadAti (giver), giver of everything. Taking the previous and the this name into consideration, he is the omniscient giver of everything. He knows who to give good knowledge, who to give knowledge that makes them kill children, who to throw into hell and whom to drag back from the path of hell towards himself. There is no point asking him for anything, because even that knowledge/desire is given by him. Surrender is to accept whatever comes along and never ask him for anything other than bhakti, jnAna and vairAgya. Because all the three are asking for him directly. bhakti of him is not indifferent than asking to give himself to you (AnaMda). His jnAna is not different from him, because he is made up of knowledge/jnAna (chit). vairAgya is non-clinginess towards everything that is eventually going to perish/changes state (asat), which is anything other than him (sat). Even greater devotees don't ask for even these 3 things.
नास्तिकप्रत्ययार्थाय दर्शितात्मप्रभाववान् - nAstikapratyayArthAya darshitAtmaprabhAvavAn - nAstika is atheist, pratyayArtha is giver of distress, darshitAtma showed himself, prabhAvAn effectfully. Opposer is a more appropriate word for pratyayArtha. Atheist opposer, who appeared to display his prowess.
hiraNyakashipu is probably the patron saint and prophet of atheists. He is the abhimAni devata of atheism. When his visheSha sannidhAna (special residence?) increases one becomes more and more atheistic.
He was the great grandson of God (viShNu -> brahma -> kashyapa -> hiraNyakashipu). He probably had seen the varAha form of the lord or atleast had a first hand account of it. He had seen brahma. He had conquered the other worlds, such as Indra's and such. He had probably studied the vedas under none other than kashyapa himself. Even after all these things he ended up hating God. His cognitive dissonance was monumental, prahlAda asks him, who his father is and he replies kashyapa brahma, who his father is and he says chaturmukha brahma and then who his father is and hiraNyakashipu goes nuts.
हिरण्यकशिपोरग्रे सभास्तंभसमुद्भवः ।
उग्रोग्निज्वालमाली च सुतीक्ष्णो भीमदर्शनः ॥ 9 ॥
हिरण्यकशिपोरग्रे सभास्तंभसमुद्भवः - hiraNyakashiporagre sabhA staMbha samudbhavaH - Appeared in front of hiraNyakashipu from the pillar in the court.
उग्रोग्निज्वालमाली - ugrOgnijvAlamAlI - ugra means violent, agni means fire, jvAla means tongues of fire, mAli means having a garland. When he burst out of the pillar he was violent and had a ring of fire around him and it was burning hot around him.
सुतीक्ष्णो - sutIkShNo - tikShNa means very hot, acrid, pungent. His form was very repulsive to the demons when he appeared. But it has a suffix su, which means auspicious, good, conducive etc., So he is burning hot towards your negative qualities and will burn, grind and corrodes our negative qualities leaving us changed for the good.
भीमदर्शनः - bhImadarshanaH - bhIma means terror inducing, darshana means appearance. In the bhagavata it says that even the gods were scared of his appearance.
दग्धाखिलजगज्जंतुः कारणं जगतामपि ।
आधारः सर्वभूतानामीश्वरः सर्वहारकः ॥ 10 ॥
दग्धाखिलजगज्जंतुः - dagdhAkhilajagajjaMtuH - dagdha is burn, akhila is all or everything, jagat is world, jaMtu are creatures or organisms. He is the burner of all the organisms of the universe when it ends. The end of the universe happens under the auspices of this form of God.
कारणं जगतामपि - kAraNaM jagatAmapi - kAraNaM means cause, jagatAmapi means "and the world". Here the meaning is probably that there are mokSha worlds and hell worlds that are created along with this, so jagatAmapi means the world and other worlds.
आधारः - AdharaH - Foundation/supporter of everything. He is the thing that everyone leans on.
सर्वभूतानामीश्वरः - sarvabhUtAnAmIshvaraH - sarva means everything, bhUtanAm means beings and IshvaraH means lord. He is the lord of all beings.
सर्वहारकः - sarvahArakaH - Destroyer of everything.
विष्णुर्जिष्णुर्जगद् धाता बहिरंतःप्रकाशकः ।
योगिहृत्पद्ममध्यस्थो योगो योगविदुत्तमः ॥ 11 ॥
विष्णुः - viShNuH - Omnipresent. viShati it viShNuH. viShati means entered. He entered the universe after creating it is what the puruSha sUkta says.
जिष्णुः - jiShNuH - Winner. He is undefeated. There are shaivaite texts that claim that shiva defeated narasimha. To add to the confusion, veda vyasa has added a story in one of the purANAs that shiva came and defeated narasimha. So the shaivaites now needed to find an animal more powerful than a lion, the king of beasts. In the purANAs there is mention of a creature with eight legs called a sharabha, which is probably imaginary, and there is a story where narasimha was defeated by shiva in the form of this creature. Which is probably one of veda vyasa's many mischiefs.
जगत् धाता - jagaddhAtA - Again jagat means world and dhAtA means supporter.
धाता - dhAta - dha is initialism for dhAraka. Literally, the wearer of the world. He supports the world by entering into it and supporting it.
बहिरंतःप्रकाशकः - bahiraMtaH prakAshakaH - bahiH is outside, aMta is inside, prakAshakaH is illuminator. The Sun illuminates the world outsides, but God illuminates the inside also with knowledge.
Someone on here was arguing with me about bhakti being different from knowledge. When you get God in your mind, he comes with love and knowledge at the same time. They are indifferent from each other in him.
योगिहृत्पद्ममध्यस्थो - yogahRtpadmamadhyastho - The one who resides in the hearts of yogins. yogins here are not the crazy people who do yoga. It means people whose minds always rests on God. kRSNa consciousness.
योगः - yogaH - yoga means union. Yoga means things, experiences and events that happen to us. He is the lord of that, so yogaH.
योगविदुत्तमः - yogaviduttamaH - yoga means union, perfection, equanimity etc., vit means knower, uttamaH means best. Union of experiences, events, things, people and all the other things that happen to us are called yoga. Yoga also means meditation. Here the mind has a union with some particular object, specifically God. There are infinite aspects of yoga and God is the only one who knows all the infinite aspects. So among the knowers of yoga he is the best.
स्रष्टा हर्ताऽखिलत्राता व्योमरूपी जनार्दनः ।
चिन्मयप्रकृतिः साक्षी गुणातीतो गुणात्मकः ॥ 12 ॥
स्रष्टा - sraShTA - Creator. sRShTi means creation.
हर्ता - harta - Destroyer.
अखिलत्राता - akhilatrAta - akhila means everything, trAta means protector or saver.
व्योमरूपी - vyomarUpI - vyoma means sky/space, rUpI means form. He is everywhere yet undetectable just like sky/space. He cannot be seen by the effects can be felt. If space wasn't there we wouldn't be able to exist. Similarly without him we wouldn't exist.
जनार्दनः - janArdanaH - This is a very beautiful and opens up in various ways. janA - janana and maraNa birth and death respectively. Ardayati is destroys. One who destroys the cycle of birth and death.
jana means people. ArdanaH means cry out in distress. One who hears the cries of people who cry out to him.
jana means evil people. We generally refer to the collective to indicate a negative. We say "these people" "you people" or "the people", when referring to a group who has wronged us or does something disagreeable. When we want to refer to good people we don't say people. People referred to as an object of something indicates generally evil people. Similarly in sanskrit jana generally refers to evil people. ardana means one who gives distress. He is the one who gives distress to evil people.
चिन्मयप्रकृतिः - chinmayaprakRtiH - maya means filled with, stuffed with. chit means knowledge. prakRtiH means nature. He has the nature of filled with knowledge.
साक्षी - sAkShI - Witness. This name has a lot of meanings and is very involved. I'll write more some other day.
गुणातीतो - guNAtItaH - He is devoid of the 3 qualities, sattva, rajas and tamas.
गुणात्मकः - guNAtmakaH - He is filled with infinite amount of auspicious guNas.
